Top 5 Communication Apps in Africa: Q1 2022 Performance

In the first quarter of 2022, the top communication apps in Africa have shown notable performance trends in terms of downloads, revenue, and active users. Here’s a closer look at how these apps fared, based on data from Sensor Tower.

WhatsApp Messenger experienced significant growth in weekly downloads, starting from around 750K at the beginning of January and peaking at over 1.5M by the third week of March. Weekly revenue remained relatively stable, hovering around $2-$3 each week. Active users fluctuated slightly but remained robust, increasing from approximately 119.3M to 120.5M over the quarter.

Messenger also saw a steady increase in downloads, beginning the quarter with about 617K and reaching up to 858K in mid-March. Revenue showed some variability, peaking at $874 in mid-February before dropping to $65 in late March. Active users remained strong, with a slight increase from approximately 92.9M to 94.4M.

Snapchat demonstrated a mixed trend in downloads, starting at around 713K and fluctuating throughout the quarter, ending at about 654K. Revenue showed a notable upward trend, peaking at $231 in the final week of March. Active users saw a slight decline from 22.4M to 21.7M during the same period.

Telegram maintained a stable number of downloads, with figures around the 500K-700K range throughout the quarter. Active users showed a slight increase, from approximately 23.4M at the start of January to 24.4M by the end of March.

WhatsApp Business saw a consistent rise in downloads, beginning at about 331K in late December and reaching up to 589K in mid-March. Active users increased steadily from approximately 7.3M to 8M over the quarter.
